Gardening in Your PJs...Planting the Salad Box

DSC_0074
After finishing our breakfast on Easter Sunday, Jonathan and I headed outside to do a bit of gardening. The morning breeze was crisp and yet the sunshine felt warm. We decided to plant one of my salad boxes. First, we filled the box with some commercial organic garden soil that had been mixed with some compost. (I should have used a potting mix but garden soil was what I had on hand).

On one side of the box, we sprinkled some lettuce seeds and then covered them lightly. Hopefully in a few weeks, we will be eating some homegrown cut-and-come-again lettuce mix. Who knew gardening in your pajamas could be so much fun?!

On the other side of the box, I transplanted some tatsoi and extra-dwarf bok choy. Hopefully they will enjoy their new home. Happy gardening everyone!

I hope you will have more luck with this direct sown lettuce. Perhaps Jonathan will have that magic touch!

  6. Awesome pictures! I love gardening with my son. We planted lettuce and asian greens in a salad box 2 weeks ago. They are finally starting to emerge. My son helped me plant potatoes this weekend (I have to get that posted to my blog). I'm so glad that Liam likes to be in the garden with me.

  7. Love the look! Rubber boots, Jammies, cool shades, and dad... what kid could want any more?! Looks like you are having a great time and he is learning so much from you. He will have a great time tending his lettuce box, and great to see a photo of you, too! Looks like you are drying out - hope the weather brings good garden days to come!

  9. Just too cute for words! What a gorgeous looking day too and the salad box should be producing quickly since the weather has really improved so much for you.

  11. Thomas, should you decide to move to this area of the country, I make myself available for baby sitting. ;) Jonathan is adorable!

Our niece and her 2 children visited last week; I had made them a carrot seed mat and they are excited to plant it, that is if it will stop raining; this will be their first garden, a plot not far from their home.

    Have a wonderful week Thomas.

  12. Not only pj's...but sunglasses AND awesome green rain boots!! I love it! Man I miss that age...my boys are now 14 and 12. My youngest went through a rain boot phase. He had these little black rain boots that he wore with everything...sweats, shorts, jeans, yes, pj's, and even his Christmas best one year! One day we went to the grocery store and he had on denim shorts, a little striped t-shirt, his black rain boots and Army guy gear we bought at the Dollar Store. It was a plastic vest, a plastic hat and a few plastic grenades. He was bombing imaginary bad guys down the aisles all through the store. I got a few "looks"...but I figure he wasn't hurting anything...so what's the bother?!

Too cute...and oh yeah...the garden looks great, too!

  14. It's good to see kids helping in the garden. I think my 8yo is past that point, but hopefully I'll be able to get my 2yo into the activities more this fall.

Nothing like gardening in pj's to make it feel like a relaxing, non-work activity... I know because I try to do it as often as possible myself--seriously! Maybe I should get some kickin' green galoshes to complete my look too!

  15. bok choy, yummy!

Is there anything in this world that is not made better by doing it in your pajamas? (except maybe firefighting) I love the pic's of your little boy. He's so cute. I have to try this with my nephew.

Starting kids off early is so important. You just know that kid will never be the one staring at his PSP for four hours straight. I had to learn by book, which is not the ideal way to learn to garden. Luckily I stumbled across Gardening Made Easy, and it helped quite a bit.

Now if my tomatoes would just be more cooperative.

  16. Oh, man...I wish I had some of those cool looking jammies! I have to garden in plain old jeans. Well, once in a while I wander around out there in my old terry cloth robe and slippers. I love it that you let Jonathan plant his own garden. I find, for tiny seeds like lettuce, it's easier for those little hands to sprinkle them onto the surface from a large salt or spice shaker. One with holes just large enough to let the seeds come out.

  17. I love your beautifully crafted salad box. Are you planning to bring it indoors or protect it in any way from inclement weather and critters?

I also loved the mini hoop houses in your previous post. I nice to see this well made garden infrastructure.

Good trainer there, pretty soon he'll be flipping the compost pile for you.

BTW your salad thingy is really nifty.

  19. I love it that Jonathan is learning to garden from you. I hope he enjoys it. I like harvesting with my little grandbabies. They ate sugar snap peas right from the garden and nibbled on lettuce when there were here last week.

Its school holidays here at the moment, so i'll be getting the boys working on sowing the late autumn/winter seeds in the next day or so.
I've never heard of dwarf bok choy - i shall have to have a good look in my seed catalog.
