I think I started my tomatoes and peppers a bit too early this year. I've never had tomato seedlings grow this quickly before. Then again, I've never had growing room that provided the kind of warmth and light that tomato plants love.
At the moment, my tomatoes are about two feet tall. I decided to move them to our unheated screened porch which still gets tons of light from a glass ceiling. Hopefully this cooler environment will slow down their growth until it's warm enough for me to set them out.
I had the same issue this year. I ended up planting them out this weekend. We'll see if my calculated gamble works out.
ReplyDeleteI planted a bit later this year because last year I was faced with the giant tomatoes you are experiencing. They are still a good size but manageable. Running out of lamps though, so outside they go. Yours are impressive Thomas.
ReplyDeleteGet some wall-o-water thing a ma jigs and fill them up and plant your tomatoes deep and on their side. Any leaves that would be under the soil need to be carefully stripped off. You can put 2/3 of those tomato plants in the ground - which makes for a better root system and stronger plant. I've had mine in the ground for a few weeks and I can't take them off until about the 3rd week in June. Our frost date is May 16th but we get lots of hail until things warm up.

ReplyDeleteMy tomatoes also got pretty tall so when I planted them I layed them and covered 2/3 way so the stem will form stronger root system.
ReplyDeleteI had the same issue last year with my lavender cuttings. The ones I put on the windowsill receives so much warmth that they grew 3 inches longer than the ones I kept outside on my porch.

Oh my, those plants sure are big! They certainly look very happy and healthy. You are going to have fun tending to them until it's time to plant them out.

ReplyDeleteWe are headed up to our place in VT to plant 100 balsam seedlings, something we are trying to do every year. I think we'll also do a day trip tour of several nurseries...Cady's Falls and Elmore Roots at least. Have you discovered these fabulous places yet?
My Meyer lemon is covered with flower buds, I am hoping for enough fruit to made marmalade this year. You inspire me!
I love that sunroom. It really is a gardener's dream come true.
ReplyDeletePlants look beautiful and as suggested by others... strip the lower leaves and plant the stem (which will root out) and give the tomatoes protective cover and they will do great.
Grow-room eye candy! I don't know which is better, those plants or the shelves and windows LOL!
