Gardener's Wish List

DSC_0053
I cannot tell you how much I love our indoor growing space. As I'd mentioned earlier, our landlord is an avid gardener and had designed this room to accommodate the bulk of her house plants and garden transplants. She referred to it as the 'conservatory' but I prefer to use the term 'green room'. Marc and I hope to one day buy a piece of farm land and build our own home. If our wish comes true, I'd like to have a room built just like this one.

I feel a bit spoiled now compared to the growing space I had in the basement of our old home. The room itself comes with a lot of perks. There are remote controlled shades that we can extend over the glass ceiling on ultra hot days and a fan that turns on automatically if the room temperature goes above a preset number.

In addition to the built-in selves, the room also has a prep station with storage, a stone counter top and a good sized sink. There are three faucets, two of which can be connected to hoses for easy watering.

What I find most impressive is the wood floor, which is sloped slightly inward and has a built-in drain. There's radiant heating underneath the floor so it dries fairly quickly.

When we move again (which hopefully won't be anytime soon), I would sorely miss this room. If you had a green room, what features would you want in it?

  1. Thank you for posting these pictures! I'd love to know the size of the room and where it is in location to the rest of the house. I'd also really like to see pictures of the ceiling windows.

We're planning on building and I'd love something like this off the kitchen. I'd like to have it close to the house, but I worry about it looking finished.

  2. I think we'd settle for just 1 room in the house that had half that many windows! We hope to build something over our deck someday. Enjoy! It looks absolutely delightful.

  3. That is an amazing room! What is the function of the rods on the front of the shelves? If the room faces south, I bet you could grow transplants without supplemental light!

  4. That is a most excellent feature to find in a home! I am so pleased that you were able to find a place that so suits your needs. It's just beautiful! I know your plants will thrive in this wonderful environment and under your loving care.

  5. Someone put a lot of work into that room. You're very lucky indeed!
I would like to have a room easy to clean. With good drainage and easy access to water.
You've given me ideas for what I call the 'sun room' at the farm. Not quite so fancy, but ideas none-the-less.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Wonderful room. It couldn't have asked for a better occupant.

  11. Oh wow, you're so lucky to have such a room. It seems ideal. Besides all the comforts it seem to also have lots of light. Yes, more details, please.

  13. I admit that the first time I saw a photo of your green room and clipped it and posted it to my private "someday house" Pinterest Board LOL! I LOVE this space, the beauty of the wood shelving against the windows of scenery is immediately blood-pressure reducing to look at!

  14. My mom has a greenhouse built into the house. It has a sink and a garden faucet. It also has a drain in the stone floor. The walls are redwood (as is the rest of the house). No fan though. She has four sliding glass doors that she opens during the day if it is warm. The only thing I don't like is how she has her growing beds. I'd put them along the edge, but hers are circular (metal) randomly placed in the room.

I wanted to build a small room like that in my current house. At the time the house wasn't finished. Then they put the air conditioning units there. Ah well. It was the only good place to put a room like that.

  15. That *is* a gorgeous room. The only thing I'd want to add to it is a bank of shelving on the interior wall with grow-lights, so that you could easily move starts from the windows to the grow lights for an extra four or five hours of light each day. Right now I'm trotting mine up and down a flight of stairs twice a day from the basement growlights to my sunporch.

  17. Wow! The room is amazing. My husband and I are also planning on purchasing farmland in the near future and a room like this would be a dream come true. Thank you so much for giving me inspiration.
