A December Harvest

DSC_0025
I decided to pick my Brussels sprouts today. They've been sitting in the garden for the past eight months, but at this point, I think they're done growing. Today was especially cold and the garden remained frosty for much of the day. I figured that if I didn't pick them today, I never would.

As you can see, I have a lot to learn about growing Brussels sprouts. They look pretty leggy, not anything like the compact robust stalks you see at the supermarket. The ones at the bottom are pretty ratty looking (I guess I should have picked these a long time ago) but the rest are fine.

These sprouts are definitely on the small side, yet large enough to be worth keeping. Maybe next year I'll get it right.

Finally, I picked the last of this year's broccoli. There wasn't much but it'll still be good in a stir-fry alongside other veggies.

  4. The sprouts don't look small to me. I like them bite sized. I think I am going to try growing some next year.

  5. I've yet to even try Brussels sprouts. Well I did try seed one year, but it never germinated.

  6. I've had a hard time figuring out Brussels sprouts too! I've tried them 3 times and they never seem to grow very big and they get attacked by aphids. I've done a little reading and I'm going to try again next summer and see if I can do better.

  7. Your brussels sprouts look great to me. Mine were just little hollow green balls.
Just the outer leaves and nothing inside.
I'd rather small than empty. ;-)

  8. Since I have none, your sprouts look great to me! I always pinched mine out at the tip when they got a couple of feet tall. That seemed to force the sprouts to size up. But they always seem to take longer than the package says!

  9. They look great Thomas and also, lots on the stalk compared to mine. I wonder if the stalks, (if not dessicated), could be peeled and used like broccoli stalks can be.

  15. Those are perfectly good sprouts! Mine are always tall and curvy like that. Variety is part of the difference and how fast they are pushed to maturity. Those of us with them in the garden for a longer duration and use natural (organic) fertilizers experienced taller plants but with less dense and fat sprouts. I think the trade off of healthy plants and food is worth not having picture perfect plants that mimic the grocery store.

  17. I finally have some time to get caught up on blogs... The brussels look pretty good to me! They're one of the veggies that elude me - I don't think we have a great climate for them since they take so long to mature...
