A Good Year for Peppers

I'm surprised by how well our peppers have done this summer compared to last year. Our Hungarian Wax peppers have been prolific and the Poblano plants are about 5 feet tall now. I'm hoping that it had something to do with how I fertilized them this year. One of my plants had succumb to disease but the rest have remained perfectly healthy.

Poblanos might just be at the top of my list of favorite peppers. I generally roast all of them on the grill, peel the skins and then store them in the freezer. They are primarily reserved for one of our all-time favorite recipes - a Roasted Poblano Pepper and Corn Soup. It packs some heat and is perfect on those chilly fall evenings. I'll have to post the recipe sometime soon.

  1. Yum...wow! Your pepper plants are doing great. And I thought mine were doing good!? I made stuffed peppers for dinner...I had a bit of hamburger meat leftover and some spanish rice leftover...I sauteed it all together, stuffed the peppers, baked in tomato sauce...delish.

  3. Oh wow! I wish my peppers did that well. Mine are slow growing this year. I think I got a late start on my pepper plants this year, and I need to fertilize better. What type did you use? Is it organic?

  4. My pepper plants are doing extremely well also. I think that they must have loved the weather this year. 5' tall is one mighty big pepper plant!

  5. Peppers are doing well here in RI too! Do share that recipe sometime...I've been wondering what to do with my poblanos! We had some roasted with other grillings this week.

  6. Peppers are a hard crop to grow in my region. When I lived in sunny hot central Washington I grew beautiful peppers and lots of varieties - now I am just glad to nurse a few plants to maturity before the fungus and rots set in. Keeping my expectations low helps a lot! LOL!

    Your pepper plants look absolutely healthy and beautiful. I love roasting peppers too as it brings out such a beautiful smokey flavor and the smell of them roasting is heavenly too. I am curious what your fertilizer regimin was with these plants?

  8. 5FT!?!? Is that what peppers are supposed to do? My gosh-Seattle is terrible for peppers. Even getting them planted early(not too early) and fertilized-my tallest is about 1ft--and I will hope for 20 peppers over 10 plants :(
    I so far have 2! Go Cayenne go!

  11. Kitsap - I fertilize them the same as my tomatoes but not as much - one palm of plant-tone, 1/2 palm of bone meal, a good amount of compost, 1 crushed aspirin pill and 2 crushed calcium tablets.

  12. It must just be the year of the pepper! Ours are doing amazing as well and a few plants have reached 6-feet in height! I fertilized with fish emulsion this year a couple times more often than last year, but other than that, no big differences in how we cared for them over last year.
