Gold Medal Tomato

DSC_0001
I picked this Gold Medal tomato earlier this week in the middle of a rain storm and it has since been slowly ripening on the kitchen table. Seed Savers Exchange regards it as their "finest bi-colored tomato". It's a stunner for sure. (Yet another reason to grow heirlooms.)

I'm looking forward to slicing this baby up. Judging from the size, it should serve as a meal unto itself.

  4. So many heirlooms are shaped like that. I wonder why today's tomatoes are plain round?
It looks great, Thomas. I am clueless about these things. Will it be almost completely yellow/golden when ripe?
Do you often pick tomatoes before they are completely ripe? Or was this one just weighing your plant down?
Judging from it's size, I'd guess the latter.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend! :)

  5. Hi Linda, I picked this baby because it was ripening on the vine while we had a major storm after weeks of no rain. I didn't want it to split do to the sudden change in moister so into the house it went to finish ripening. Usually I let my tomatoes ripen completely on the vine.

  7. It does look pretty. One of my favorite summer treats is the typical Caprese salad. Nothing is better than fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil.

  9. Beautiful! It's rare to get those heirlooms without cracks and green near the stem but you have a great tomato plant there!

  10. I'm so unbelievably jealous of your tomatoes!

I live in a short climate (Zone 3) in Alberta, Canada and I've never had a tomato that looked that good! I was thrilled to pick the first 3 ripe cherry tomatoes this week (and that was very early for my climate!). I'm thinking I need a greenhouse :)

  12. I have not finalized my seed list for spring. Thank goodness. I have added this to my list. I checked all my seed companies. Seed Savers seem to be the only place that have it. Thanks for sharing the info Thomas.

  13. I grow 200 Gold Medal tomato plants every year for our local farmers market. Exceptional flavor and looks. Sold one last year that was 2.5lbs @ $3.50 per. My favorite tomato for the market, turns a lot of heads.
