Mending Fences

DSC_0002
Despite the awful weather, Jonathan and I were able to get some work done in the garden this past weekend.

Our first order of business was to move one end of the fence enclosing the side garden eight feet closer to the growing beds. This section of the garden doesn't get much light and the area had become neglected and covered with overgrown grass and weeds. I started by marking where the fence was being moved to and dug a narrow trench. Cutting and pulling up this section of fence was much easier than I'd expected since the ground is still moist and loose.

Once the fence was in place, I closed off the cut ends and replaced the sod. In total, this job took about an hour. All that's left to do now is to lay down some cardboard and straw to kill this narrow patch of grass.

Next, I had to tackle the fence enclosing the back garden. I'd put it up hastily last summer and with all of the snow we had this past winter, it was in really rough shape. Taking it down was the easy part. Digging the perimeter trench, adding several more stakes and putting the fence back up took all afternoon.

Thankfully, I think it turned out pretty well. Now that the bottom six inches of the fence is buried, I doubt the rabbits will be able to break through this summer. And the extra polls should prevent the wire fencing from sagging.

I even got around to building a new door for the back garden. Now I won't have to leap over the fence like a crazy person.

  1. Lucky you to have such a great helper! The two of you did a great job on the fence and gate!

  2. A door! You know... I have been planning out my garden for the property I recently purchased. I had the fencing all laid out, lists of needed materials, all that stuff.

But it never occurred to me to add an entrance! Thanks for the epiphany.

  3. That reminds me of the gate K made for our main garden. Gotta keep the pup out.

  4. Jonathon is such a darling! What a great helper to have with you in the garden. The fencing projects turned out great - particularly the rework of the back garden fencing. That turned out really nice and the gate/door is very nicely done.

  6. Or do like I do, and attempt to hop over the fence, and catch your foot so you fall flat on your face in full view of your neighbours and their guests having supper on their deck. Oddly enough, gate building is on my to-do list this year as well :))

Your garden looks good! I'm jealous of the space you have!

  7. I especially like the sunglasses and green wellies.

  8. Somehow I think he didn't need those sunglasses with the weather we have been getting, but he is awfully cute.

I do want a video of you trying to jump over the fence even if you did put in a nice gate. Hmm you could grow morning glories over the top of the frame. That would be really pretty. Or runner beans.

  9. I can't believe how much Jonathon has grown! We had to redo our garden fence too. I have gates on two sides, but still jump the fence. Less so now after catching my heel on the edge and falling in. LOL!

  10. Thanks for your comments everyone! I'm glad I'm not the only one jumping awkwardly over fences. I'm sure one of us will end up on America's Funniest Home Videos one of these days.

  11. I have a gate but I still climb over sometimes LOL! I see Jonathan's front end loader in the garden, is he in a union yet? And it seems he has had the same pair of sunglasses for quite awhile - how do you do it?! My kids are forever losing their glasses! Everything looks good, little man is getting tall!

  12. Yes, you leaping the fence must have been quite a sight. Looks like you have a serious gardener-in-training there- how wonderful!

  13. Excellent job...very impressed. Looks great and the doorway will be much better than having to do the high jump!

  14. Erin - those are Jonathan's everyday glasses. They're transition lenses. Thankfully we're only on his second pair. (The first one he chewed up when he was 2.)
