Winter Storm Warning...in October???

Strange things happen when you're away. Last night I returned home after spending the past couple of days in San Francisco for work. It was the first time in 11 years since I'd been there and from what I could tell, the city hasn't changed much. It's still one of my favorite cities in the United States and the weather was perfect.

Interestingly, I just found out that we're expected to get between 6 - 10 inches of snow within the next 36 hours starting sometime later today. A snow storm in October??? I can't remember the last time this happened. So much for Indian Summer. Admittedly, I find myself in somewhat of a bind right now. I've yet to do the bulk of my fall garden clean up and I'm not sure if I'll be able to cover all of my growing beds in time. Needless to say, today will be a busy day.

I hope the rest of my fellow New England gardeners are better prepared than I am.

  1. This is just crazy! We haven't even had a hard frost yet! We got home late last night and now it's snowing! I did manage to go out early this morning and put the tops on the cold frames and get the snow shovels out of the garage.

I guess it will be a week or so until I can get the plants out of the basement and planted in the cold frames. At least my garlic was planted before we left.

  2. Thomas - Quite a few of the blogs I follow are all mentioning early snow storms in the Us. Really strange! Dunno what that means for the next few months...

Hope you get your garden done in time.

  4. The opposite is happening here in the high peaks of the Adirondack Mountains. We ALWAYS have snow by the first week of October. I have not seen a flake yet. The snow has been staying south of us.

My garden first frosted in mid-September. The last 2 nights were 16 and 17 degrees. Surprisingly the kale and some other greens are still OK. Hard to believe...but the petunias I started from seed are STILL alive and flowering even though I have not been covering them.

  5. Wow, that's quite the snow. We'll NEVER see anything like that in this neck of the woods. I know it's probably not fun to have to live through, but it sure is pretty to the rest of us! Be careful and stay warm!
