Tropical Storm Sunday

DSC_0095
It's been raining for most of the morning, but boy, the winds are really starting to pick up now. I don't remember the last time the Northeast was under the direct path of a hurricane or tropical storm. It will be interesting to see how the garden holds up. I have a feeling my giant purple sprouting broccoli will be horizontal by the end of today. We don't expect too much damage in our area but I'm hoping that we won't lose electricity.

Whenever we're confronted with a major weather event, whether it be a winter blizzard or a summer thunderstorm, I always get the tremendous urge to make soup. This time around, I made two kinds - a tomato soup for Marc (using our homegrown heirloom tomatoes, celery, onions and carrots)...

...and a yummy sausage and lentil soup for me. I also made some garlic naan bread to go with our satisfying lunch (the recipe for which I'll post later this week).

  3. My daughter lives in eastern/central PA and they had a few trees knocked down - one of which hit their shop. We are just glad no one was hurt and that the damage to the shop does not look too severe as it was a smallish tree.

The soups look absolutely delicious. I want to shelter in place with you during the next storm and you get to cook! :D

  5. Those soups look delicious. I was just outside in the storm. It wasn't too bad, but I had to shore up one of my bean supports. One of my peach trees is almost lying flat too. I'll have to deal with that tomorrow.

  6. They both look DELICIOUS. What recipe do you use for the tomato soup? I had a delicious tomato bisque while in Belgium and have been trying to emulate it since.

Yours look great. I hope the storm wasn't too hard on you all!

  8. Any chance we could have the lentil soup recipe? Winter's coming and a hearty soup is great when it's well below zero air temp around here!

  9. Hope your gardens are OK! Those soups look wonderful! We are no where near your storms, but I made soup this weekend, too! Something in the air?

  13. Michelle and Lynn, I'll try to get around to posting recipes for both soups. My tomato soup pretty straight forward - I saute some diced onions, garlic, celery and carrots in some butter and then puree them in a blender with some chicken stock. Back into the pot it goes with fresh tomato puree and a bay leaf. I let it simmer for at least 30 minutes then season with some salt, pepper and a bit of sugar. This time around, I also added a tiny pinch of cumin and garnished with some basil. If I had thought of it, I would have added some cream at the end as well.

  14. Hope you made out ok with the storm, we had almost no rain, but a lot of wind and lost power for about 24 hours, which isn't bad at all compared to what others are still dealing with.
