The Very Definition of Stupidity!

Oak Park Woman Faces 93-Days in Jail For Planting Vegetable Garden: MyFoxDETROIT.com

This just makes me so mad! It seems this poor woman faces 93 days in jail for growing vegetables on her front lawn. If I was a resident of Michigan, I would be incensed that my state tax dollars were going toward prosecuting this woman. I find it most ironic that the district attorney doesn't feel compelled to go after residents in the neighborhood who allow weeds to take over their properties. It seems the town of Oak Park would rather see their residents neglect their front lawns than to actually put it to good use.

In my opinion, it should be a constitutional right (human right for that matter) to grow food anywhere you would like on your property.

  1. I have been following this story since it hit the web. Isn't it crazy!

My husband and I took a walk the another day and I told myself I would count all the vegetable gardens I could see from the street... this was before the story broke. I counted 11 in a 4 block area. If I didn't have a big shade tree in my front yard I would put in a vegetable garden... in fact one of my neighbors down the street has a sign in his front yard that reads "Farm Your Lawn" and that is just what he is doing.

  3. Good for Julie, If I was her neighbor I would rip out my lawn and do the same thing.

  4. Argg blogger is so being stubborn today. But it is just so silly to possibly be sent to jail for growing vegetables in your front yard. My town has vegetable gardens in the front yards, in the side yards and in the back yards. Everywhere.

  5. This story is heartbreaking. I hope everyone realizes how stupid this is and lets the woman be. I read something online that said her front yard garden was "uncommon" and that is why it's not allowable, so I would be so happy to see some neighbors band together and make front yard veggie gardens to make it more common in that neighborhood :)

  6. The irony is, I feel, in the not too distant future this story will beyond irrelevant in that the currency will BE food itself for all intents and purposes..If you think of it in historical terms it is only since the Industrial Revolution more or less that food trading wasn't the norm. Perhaps her neighbors will think better of her when the Twinkies are no longer on the shelves and the lights no longer go on when you flick the switch. So, be of good cheer..change is inevitable. (of course no promises on how peaceful that transistion will be..just sayin')

  11. That seems totally bizzarre! I thought jail was for criminals not people making good use of their garden to grow food!

  12. It is insanity. The prosecuter should be made to hold themselves accountable for their actions. It is completely illogical and unwarranted and a waste of valuable time and resources.

  13. SOOOOOO DUMB! I hope she wins this. This is all because of her one neighbor (who didn't have the guts to be on camera) with too much time on her hands, who, quite frankly, needs to step out of her mules/pantyhose and into the twenty-first century.

  14. “I could sell out and save my own self and just not have them bother me any more, but then there’s no telling what they’re going to harass the next person about.”

This woman is my hero. She knows it’s about more than just growing food -- it’s about the peaceful enjoyment of one’s property without harassment by government. Quite simply, this is about freedom. A jury will know what to do.

  15. This is a good display of our 'democracy'. They tell us 'You can do everything you want, if we want the same'. But nothing more.

  16. Thanks for your comments everyone. This is government bureaucracy at it's finest if you ask me. Obviously the code is outdated and reflects the mindset of the community 50 years ago. There are too many pencil pushers in the government if you ask me and not enough folks in positions of power to really stand up for what's right and fair.
