This Week's Harvest - Disappearing Greens

DSC_0004
This week's harvest was a mix of odds and ends. At the moment, we're waiting for the next big thing to come along. A few weeks ago, it was the Asian greens. I'm guess pretty soon, it will be either the cucumbers or zucchini. But for now, I'm expecting our weekly harvest to remain pretty modest.

The broccoli harvest from our nine plants has been decent, but nothing extraordinary. They along with our remaining Asian greens account for most of the veggies on our present dinner plates.

I picked the first of our snow peas a few days ago. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of them in the weeks to come. Snow peas have proven to be a fairly reliable crop in our garden.

On a sweeter note, the wild strawberries are pouring in. I'm glad I planted them last year. Hopefully, I'll be saying the same thing about our Seascape strawberries this time next year.

This is just to give you a sense of how big they are. As you can see, it'll take more than a few to satisfy one's sweet tooth. However, what they lack in size, they more than make up for in flavor.

On a sad note, the last six heads of lettuce in our garden have turned bitter. It was bound to happen sooner or later but I was hoping for the latter. My plans to have a consistent supply of salad greens this summer has come to an abrupt end. I started two heat-tolerant varieties (Manoa and Anuenue) a few weeks ago but it will be a while before they're ready. I guess we'll be relying on our local farmer's market for salad greens this summer.

  1. The broccoli looks yummy. We harvested our first bit of broccoli today and I was in heaven at dinner because it is one of my favorite veggies. Sorry to hear the lettuces went bitter on you. Ours is holding up so far just fine - but we have not had the extremes in temps you have been getting - which I am sure has something to do with your lettuces getting bitter.

  5. I'm having the same problem with lettuce. Those two heat spells along with some really cold spells was hard on the lettuce. I'll be planting some more lettuce out today, but I really wish I had done my successions sooner. I've got a couple of weeks now before the next lettuce harvest really starts. Usually lettuce doesn't get bitter this fast.

  6. Sorry about your lettuce, here too we are now out. I sowed some more "heat tolerant" varieties but only 2 of the 4 varieties have sprouted, I'm hoping to have one of them be a winner this summer!

  9. Thanks for you comments everyone. Yes, the white 'yellow wonder' strawberries are sweet! In fact, I find them even more flavorful then the red wild variety.

  12. Your harvests look great! I am drooling over your broccoli. I started my seeds forever ago but the plants are still so tiny.

  13. The white berries are so good! My plants from last year are producing again and a couple of plants volunteered along the edge of the garden path so I'm letting those grow. Sorry to hear about the bitter lettuce. It hasn't been hot enough around here to turn anything bitter, except perhaps this chilly gardener. But today it actually hit 70, a virtual heat wave - har har...

  16. Thomas, your trellis look beautiful.... you always do such good work.

Your harvest of broccoli appears the same as ours: first heads were quite small this year; plus unusual things occurring are some of the cooler weather plants have bolted prior to harvest, i.e. mustard greens and tatsoi. We are finally getting some warmer daytime temperatures (72 degrees is a heatwave these days).
Hope all is well with you and your family; I always love dropping by to see how you are.
