Harvest of Mid-June

DSC_0003
I don't have much to say about this week's harvest...mainly because it's late, my back is stiff from working in the garden and I'm ready for bed. This weekend, I thinned my beets and harvested a few baby ones. I'm growing three types this year - Red Detroit, Golden and Chioggia.

This week's harvest was dominated by three things - snow peas...

garlic scapes...

and broccoli side-shoots.

While harvesting the same things repeatedly might result in dinner dishes being a bit repetitive, I don't mind so much. It just goes with the territory of eating seasonally. And it's a reminder that we won't see large bowls of homegrown snow peas and garlic scapes again until next June.

  1. Keeping up with all of the chores in the garden this timne of year can certainly be rough on the body, and I feel your pain, ol' buddy...

  2. Honestly, it is pretty hard to get tired of garlic scapes, snow peas, or broccoli! I love all three and always savor their time on harvest center stage. It sounds like you had a productive weekend. :D

  3. I'm anxiously awaiting my snap peas and shelling peas. Just a little while longer and they'll be ready. I also tell myself that when eating seasonally, you gotta roll with the punches. I have greens coming out of my ears but it's nice not having to buy anything and knowing where my food is coming from! Enjoy your harvest!!

  5. Gosh, your crops are so much further forward than ours are!
I've had salad leaves for a while, but only picked the first runner beans yesterday!
    It's all

  7. Your three things look very good. I'd love to be bringing in peas right now. But I WAS blessed with some good broccoli. Not much, but it was good!

  8. Seasonal eating does take some getting used to, but it's such a treat to eat really fresh vegetables and coming up with new ways to use the abundance helps to make me a more creative cook. Your harvest looks great, love those beets!

  9. I wish I was getting a lot of broccoli side shoots. I'm getting some, but not so much. I wish broccoli was more productive.

  10. How do you grow your broccoli? Transplants or direct sowing outdoors and what timing? I'm trying broccoli for the first time this year. So far garden pests have me a little depressed about mine, but any pointers might be nice for more success next year? :)

  11. What do you do with garlic scapes? Do you do the same with leek scapes? I think I have both and I didn't know you could eat them. :)
