The Early June Garden

DSC_0065
With the longest day of the year fast approaching, you can definitely feel the slow transition from spring to summer taking place. Everything in the garden seems to be growing steadily now; the plants act as though they are reaching for the sky...in stark contrast to the bleak days of winter.

An definite indicator that the weather is beginning to warm up, the Thai watermelon is beginning to spread its wings. Hopefully this will be a good year for melons.

And after a rough start, the Charantais melons are beginning to perk up. I was good about amending the planting holes with plenty of composted manure and slow release organic fertilizer. Feed away my friends.

I got my first squash blossom the other day. I wonder how long it will be before I get my first zucchini harvest.

The beets have taken their sweet time growing this year. I sowed these seeds in March. Germination was not great and they are just now beginning to swell up.

The packet of seeds contained a blend of several varieties including Detroit Red, Golden, and Chioggia beets. I was really looking forward to the Golden beets but unfortunately, none made it to this point.

Finally, on the tomato front, my early sown plants are flowering well but slow nonetheless to set fruit, except that is for the Sungold.

Then I noticed that my first Sungold tomato was starting to change color. How exciting! Maybe I'll even have a tiny ripe tomato to include in next week's harvest post.

  3. Whee! Your first tomato is almost ripe! Yesterday I was telling Mr. Granny we had a tiny tomato forming on our Sungold, and as I lifted it to show him, I broke it off :-(

Your garden is looking more lush and beautiful with every post.

  5. Your garden is gorgeous! I just love well tended vegetable gardens, they are so lovely. Good luck with that tomato! I suspect it will go to the youngest gardener?

  6. Very very nice. I see Mr. Pippin is watching over the garden. I think that you will be the first in this zone with a ripe tomato. I have a lot of tomatoes...but, none showing signs of ripening. My Little Garden Helper checks them every day.

  7. Everything is so green, the rain must be treating you well this year. My watermelons looked just like that and then we had a heat wave one week and they exploded into quick growth and flowers just this week, congrats on those tomatoes turning color, I think it's the most anticipated event in most gardens!

  8. The recent weather has done wonders for our gardens...a little bit of heat, a bit of sun, and even some rain here and there. A perfect recipe for growth! Your melons are coming along, mine are following a little behind yours, but are growing as well. The first tomato is very exciting!!!

  16. It looks great there. I got frustrated with the slow germination on my beets a few weeks ago and turned them over to start again. Maybe I should have left them.

  17. Thomas, you are a master gardener! By the way, I have Shanghai Bok Choy to share - I harvested all 9 lbs. And our Chinese Kale last night was delicious, and I do love eating it raw. Thank you.

  19. Thomas, I love your neatly arranged raised beds...I had lots of people ask for Sungold tomatoes at the farmer's market this year...too bad I didn't grow any.

  20. Oh lucky you. The first tomato is always a treat. This year my first tomatoes were from the farmer's market yesterday. They had a mix of mostly cherry tomatoes. Yum. I need some from my garden, but their first blooms are on the plants right now so it will take a bit of time.

  21. Everything is growing so fast, including the weeds. I think that weeds are growing faster than any other plant in my garden.

Everything is looking great! I still have only flowers on my tomatoes.

  22. I love your gnome! Your garden is really looking great. We gleefully harvested our first two tomatoes today - let the season begin!

  24. I've got flowers on the tomato plants in my greenhouse, but no fruits as yet. I've given up on ourdoor tomatoes as the last 3 years have been a total fail ....I got fruits, but then bad weather kicked in and drowned them each time!
It's all looking jolly prouctive in your garden Thomas :)

  25. Thomas, your garden is breathtaking. Everything is so green and beautiful. We have a pesky rabbit getting into our upstarts....hubby is determined to get him. He seems to nibble on everything but the lettuce. Never has touched the lettuce.

  26. Hello there! You have a serious green thumb going on. Everything's growing! My garden's a little humbler. I lose a plant every couple of days, but most survive.
