End of May Harvest

End of May Harvest 2
I hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day weekend. We couldn't have been blessed with better weather this year. May ends with a nice harvest of tasty greens.

I picked 2 more heads of Red Sails lettuce. I'm glad to note that despite my initial bitter encounter, the lettuce is tasting mighty good.

The ever so reliable Tuscano kale came through again. Grow this vegetable and you will never hungry. I've been trying to stay on top of the little green caterpillars that arrived a couple of weeks ago. After some handpicking and bit of Dipel Dust, I think I have them under control. (The robins have been very helpful as well.)

Switch Chard
New to this week's harvest is Rhubarb Chard. The flavor is much more pungent than the Rainbow Chard I grew this past winter. Though I'm not a huge fan of this vegetable, I do love adding it to soups.

End of May Harvest
I also harvested some Shanghai bok choy and overwintered Rainbow Chard. The recent hot weather had caused the bok choy to bolt prematurely. Hopefully, it still tastes okay.

bolded chard
Interestingly, the overwintered chard started bolting weeks ago but still tastes good. It was nice to get one last cutting before pulling up the plants.

Red of Florence Scallions
Finally, I pulled a few of my Red of Florence scallions to see how they were coming along. The color was amazingly brilliant. I added some to a grilled shrimp salad I made today. The taste was nice and not too overpowering. I will definitely grow them again.

Total harvest this week: 2.93 lbs

  1. All your veggies look yummy! I planted some Lacinto Kale this year (first try) and can't wait to taste them. Great blog!

  4. Chard doesn’t change the taste when bolting. That is also my experience.
I have to sow my Tuscan kale earlier next year, as it’s still very small.
    Great harvest!

  5. I love the look of those scallions. So pretty. I'm glad Red Sails is good now. I've found that it holds well in the heat compared to most of the lettuces. I don't find that it gets bitter quickly. We have had some weird hot weather though. I'm worried about my romaines. I hope they don't bolt before the heads are ready.

  8. Beautiful harvest! I don't know why, but I so love the look of red and burgundy veggies. Those scallions are very pretty.

  9. The greens look lovely and you are so right about kale. It is a hard working crop in the garden - producing a lot of food for a long period in a not very much space. Love the baby red onions! So pretty.

  10. I have got to get some chard planted! Yours looks so nice, and the fact that it overwintered is a big plus in my books.

Your red scallions are farther along than mine. Now that I've seen what they look like I can hardly wait!

On another note, you mentioned your Piracicaba broccoli was bitter, and ours is too. It's not bad steamed, but it's not sweet like I thought it would be. I would blame it on the heat but it's supposed to be bred for the heat. The jury is still out on whether I will grow it again.

  11. The color of these shallots, wow!

Nice to know that black kale is easy in your area. In my area it bolts too readily, and the leaves get so skinny that they are not nice to eat any more. For me it is a very temperamental kale.

My chard is also bolting like yours. Chard is a good plant to harvest while bolted.

  12. The red florence looks fantastic. I agree with you when it comes to kale. It's a very reliable vegetable. I don't have too many caterpillar issues on mine but then I haven't looked very closely. I like the way the chard looks bolted.

  14. Love those scallions ... they conjure up images of exotic cockatiels grooming one another in the sunlight.

  16. The red scallions look great. I have a couple cell packs of them growing that still need to find a home. Not sure if I need more time or energy :-)
