The First Summer Harvest

DSC_0071
Aside from saying that these are probably the best looking beets I've ever grown and that the chipmunks got to all three of my perfectly ripe Sungold tomatoes, I think I'll let the photos speak for themselves. Enjoy!

  2. Beautiful harvest and a lovely variety of items you are getting now. It looks like your hand pollination of the zucchinis worked well for you.

  4. I’m sorry about your sungold tomatoes. I hope you get the next ones.
Great harvest. Once those zucchinis take off, there is no stopping them...

  6. Those beets are Beautiful! You need to get a cat to take care of those chipmunks :)

  7. Great photos, Thomas. Your garden is looking awesome. I agree with Robin. Our farm cats take care of all of my garden pests, except the deer.

  11. lol@turling. I was thinking the same thing. How utterly maddening, Thomas. I hope they got acid reflux.

  13. It's too bad I can't just make a recording of the word "beautiful", and plug it into your blog comments to play each time you post. Your photographs are just gorgeous, and your harvest is divine.

  14. Oooh, lovely harvest photos! Those beets are lovely, and so is the lettuce. Too bad about the Sungolds, but hopefully there will be lots more!

  15. I think it is great that you can grow lettuce. I never realized that there were warmer varieties, so to speak.
I grew up in Michigan and my brothers worked in a celery field when they were growing up. It was cool and muck when they did.

I think I will research this as I would love to grow my own. :)

  16. Wonderful harvest variety! And the critters can be so frustrating! We've been having vole wars this year. I don't protest the vole's right to exist but I do have a problem with them feasting on OUR garden! :)

I almost hate to say it, but here in NC, I just harvested a entire small bucket of tomatoes this evening - right at 3 pounds. It's the most volumnous tomato harvest yet this year. Our center kitchen counter is, literally, full of tomatoes from the past few days of harvest. Tomato sandwiches and biscuits are in our future!

Love checking in on your blog! The pics are great!

  18. It almost looks like you painted your beets deep red! How do you get them to turn out so gorgeous? The rest of your harvest looks scrumptious, too.

  27. Two years ago the chipmunks were horrible. They would eat everything. They ate my tomatoes, the zucchini flowers, the greens. They even chomped into my hot peppers, but they only did that once. I had a good laugh when they did that. Beautiful photos.

  28. Your vegetables always look like they were picked at the perfect moment - not too big nor too small and always incredibly fresh looking. Beautiful!

Dang those chipmunks, that's a capital offense in my opinion.

  29. WOW!!
your harvest looks awesome. Love the deep red of the beets.
The only thing I have gotten so far are onions, 1 jalapeno, a few beans and 5... yes 5 cucumbers. Dang rabbits keep eating everything.
I did put some hot pepper spray on the garden today, hoping that works.

  30. Oh my goodness, the beets do look beautiful. Something about bright red vegetables always gets me, whether it be shiny tomatoes, deep red beets or perfectly crisp radishes. I actually harvested a few (radishes) this summer that were so perfect, round and red I didn't even want to eat them? How did you cook up your harvest?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I got so excited writing about my radishes that I put a question mark instead of an exclamation point...what I meant to say was, I almost didn't want to eat them!!!

  32. Hi Kate - thank you. I think I'll be roasting them simply and the greens will be frozen for soups this fall.

  33. Wow! Your harvest was all so good! It makes me want too eat salads made of those! The beets are really great! I harvested my potatoes last week and I made salad out of it. Taste good!

  34. Wonderful harvest you got. So freshly looking that make me want to munch on it at once, specially those lettuce. Your produce surely speaks of how well you had taken care of your vegetable garden.
