The End of Spring Harvest

The end of Spring harvest was a bountiful one. For starters, the Tuscan kale continues to give and give. At this point, I don't mind surrendering a few leaves to the cabbage worms. Also included in this haul is a bunch of Red of Florence Scallions, some herbs (thyme and oregano) and a big head of Marvel of the Seasons lettuce.

It seems that I will have to wait a bit longer to taste this beautiful lettuce. This harvest was a gift to our friends who had invited us over for dinner on Saturday night. Admittedly, I have a tendency to give a lot of our homegrown produce away as opposed to freezing it. For me, it is much more of a personal and nourishing gift than say a store-bought cake or bottle of wine. (Although I would certainly never turn away cake or alcohol.) Also, I knew that our friends, who have a little urban veggie patch of their own, would appreciate it.

Indicative of this time of year, the snow pea and Fava bean plants are reaching the tail end of their production whereas the early sown green beans are starting to produce. I love these contender beans. They have faint green strips and are perfectly long and slender - just how I like my them. Unfortunately, I was only able to get 8 plants to germinate this year. It will be interesting to see how many green beans I can coax from these vines.

Finally, I harvested my first zucchini of the summer this weekend. At the moment, I am in awe of this vegetable. Within a span of 24 hours, this zucchini literally doubled in size. This one ended up being a bit larger than I would normally like. But still, I can't wait to grill this baby up.

Greens - 2.95 lbs
Scallions - 0.41 lb
Herbs - 0.09 lb
Peas and beans - 1.92 lbs
Zucchini - 0.68 lb

Total harvest this week - 6.05 lbs

  1. As usual, your harvest of greens and onions are great looking! You'll love that zucchini on the grill - it's a nice one!

  2. This is a great idea - to give surplus of home grown food as a gift. And you are right - it’s much more personal.

    Those zucchini do grow fast. Last year I was harvesting only VERY BIG ones (above 4 lb) as they grew during the week when I was not there. I have to say that they taste the same as small ones.

  3. I like eating the green beans raw straight frmo the vine. I'm wondering if the Fava beans are what we know as Broad Beans?

    Zucchinis are amazing aren't they? You can sit there and watch them grow!

  5. Oh the first zucchini (of many I'm sure). Mine still haven't bloomed yet. I'm waiting. There were buds on them this weekend so it should be soon. Of course the early ones are all males, but that is ok. I eat them in my salads. They really make them look pretty. Everyone else in the area seems to have their first female blossom open or they are picking. But my initial seeding did weird things and it took me a while to get with it and put more seed in the ground.

  7. I am still in awe of those beautiful scallions! I'm with you on gifting harvests, I do a lot of that since sometimes all the canning/freezing etc gets to be too much and I feel like I'm drowning!

  8. Beautiful Harvest! I agree with you in regards to giving away homegrown and produced items rather than something from the store! I am drying herbs to give has gifts this year around the holidays.

  9. Pictures of your red scallions spurred me to dig out some old red onion bunching seed I had stashed away - and I planted quite a bit of it this weekend, as an intercrop with the late season corn.

    The favas and early green beans are beuatiful. And I always am in awe of how fast zucchini grows. It's kind of a miracle plant in many ways.

  11. It's amazing how fast zucchini grow! In a day or two they can grow from too small to too big.

  12. I swear that your zuke looks polished. Lovely. I marvelled once again on how much I like the looks of the Marvel of 4 seasons lettuce. I try to give away produce or at least cook it up for guests too. It's fun and a lot goes into it.

  13. That's a great looking harvest. What a way to go out!

    I'm envious of your zucchini, mine just sat there, looking as it had forever ago. Yesterday, I got so frushtrated that I harvest it, wee thing that it was, along with another two even smaller yet and two blossoms. Take that.

    They would have been better, I think, had I given them more time, but they were just sitting there.

    But your looks great, and I'm optimistic that my plant will come around. But then it is planted in a container, and I'm not sure that's a good thing for it.

  14. Zucchini!!!! This is my first time to ever grow it but my kids have discovered that they like it. My first plants died. Not sure why but they were seedlings from a nursery and I think they may not have been healthy. I have replanted from seeds. I hope they will produce for me.

  16. I am guessing 8 beans plants could make quite a few green beans. Too bad that more didn't germinate.

    I love the look of those Red of Florence onions. Now I am even more anxious to pull some of ours!

  17. Those sneaky zucchini, ignore them for a day and they try to take over the garden!

    That was a marvelous gift to your friends. That whole harvest could be a cover shot for a gardening magazine. And those beans and peas, gorgeous.

  21. Great harvest and beautiful pictures. You are doing good, my beans are beginning to sprout, I'm sowing another handful today, just in case. I had such bad luck with them earlier I'm going all the way, whatever little space I have I stick couple bean seeds there.
