Radish Harvest

I harvested most of my red altaglobe radishes last night and ended up with a big bouquet of this humble vegetable. My mother-in-law, who's a major radish lover, was kind enough to play bride while I snapped this picture. These small red radishes are best when harvested the size of large marbles, any bigger and they become pithy and hot. The ones I picked last weekend were on the larger side and tasted hot. These were milder.

I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of plain raw radishes and probably wouldn't snack on them whole like my mother-in-law does. Maybe sliced thin and dressed up in a salad would be better. Anyway, I sent her home with most of this haul and plan on quick-pickling the ones I kept.

I'm hoping to acquire a taste for radishes as they are very easy grow and quick to harvest. If not, I would probably grow them anyway and give most of them away. How do you like to eat YOUR radishes? I'd like to know what' I'm missing.

    I never used to like radishes until I grew my own. I'm a huge fan of the french breakfast variety personally. My favorite way to eat them is this:

    Toast up a slice of good bread (sourdough or rye is especially yummy) butter it and top with a few leaves of spinach, then top that with thin slices of radishes and sprinkle with salt & pepper. I sometimes top it with an egg over easy too... Sounds odd but is definately a favorite of mine.

    I don't like the really hot radishes, but they are easy to grow. I do enjoy them in salads. I'll be growing them in my fall garden. Your bouquet looks great, so red and plump.

    It's a good thing I'm not a radish fan, because I don't care what anyone says, they are NOT easy to grow! Not for me, anyway. I am a radish growing failure. I guess my beds are too fertile (to much nitrogen), as I grow all tops with no roots. Although I rather tend to pooh-pooh that idea, as I grow perfectly respectable carrots, beets and parsnips. I just plain can't grow radishes!

    Haha...Gran, you are too funny. I've never heard anyone complain that their garden was too fertile. I guess that's why your garden looks so good. And respectable is not the right word to describe your carrots, beets and parsnips. OUT OF THIS WORLD is more I like it.

    I don't like radishes either, so I just don't grow them. It's funny that you said your mom played the bride with the radish bouquet. I always said that when I get married, I'm going to carry a bouquet of garden vegetables. They're so pretty! I'm such a dork!

    Oh...I can grow the crap out of radishes, but the taste is just awful! Maybe I need to grow some for granny, then ship them to her in a little box - with smiley faces on it?
